Main Research Findings

Fenoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and gout. These papers investigate the effectiveness and side effects of fenoprofen.

Fenoprofen has been shown to improve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis in studies such as 14 , 26 , 27 , 11 , 5 , 20 , 29 , 2 , and 24 . Additionally, a study 3 suggests that it is effective in treating gouty arthritis.

However, studies such as 28 , 6 , 12 , 10 , and 1 have reported the potential for fenoprofen to cause side effects in the digestive system, kidneys, and liver.

Reasons for Side Effects

Fenoprofen reduces pain and inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. However, prostaglandins play a crucial role in protecting the digestive system. Therefore, when fenoprofen inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, it can cause side effects such as gastric ulcers and digestive disorders.
