Original Abstract of the Article

Major Research Findings

Megestrol acetate is an appetite stimulant used to treat anorexia and weight loss. It has been studied in various settings, including cancer cachexia, AIDS-related weight loss, dialysis patients, postmenopausal breast cancer patients, and anorexia and weight loss in the elderly. 6 , 9 , 13 , 8 , 16 , 15

Reasons for Side Effects

Megestrol acetate is a drug that mimics the effects of the hormone progesterone. Progesterone is a type of female hormone involved in maintaining pregnancy and breast development. Megestrol acetate binds to progesterone receptors, mimicking the effects of progesterone. However, megestrol acetate is a stronger progesterone agonist, which can lead to side effects. 9

Common Side Effects

Weight Gain

Megestrol acetate can cause weight gain due to its appetite-stimulating effect. 10 , 6 , 13 , 8 , 16

Edema

Megestrol acetate can cause edema due to its water-retaining properties. 9

Thrombosis

Megestrol acetate may increase the risk of thrombosis. 9

Mood Changes

Megestrol acetate can cause mood changes and depression. 9

Other Side Effects

Megestrol acetate may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, indigestion, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver dysfunction, hypertension, fever, hair loss, skin discoloration, and sexual dysfunction. 9 , 1

Side Effect Management

Weight Gain

To prevent weight gain, dietary therapy and exercise therapy are essential. Adjusting the dosage of megestrol acetate according to the doctor's instructions may also be necessary. 10 , 6 , 13 , 8 , 16

Edema

To reduce edema, measures such as limiting salt intake and resting with your feet elevated are needed. 9

Thrombosis

To reduce the risk of thrombosis, measures such as quitting smoking, exercising, and managing weight are necessary. 9

Mood Changes

If you are concerned about mood changes or depression, consult your doctor. Antidepressant medication or other therapies may be required. 9

Comparison Between Studies

Similarities in Studies

Many studies have shown that megestrol acetate is effective in treating anorexia and weight loss. Megestrol acetate may also cause side effects such as weight gain, edema, thrombosis, and mood changes. 10 , 6 , 13 , 8 , 16 , 15

Differences in Studies

The effectiveness and side effects of megestrol acetate may vary depending on the patient's condition and the purpose of treatment. For example, in the treatment of cancer cachexia, megestrol acetate is widely used as an effective treatment. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness and side effects of megestrol acetate in dialysis patients and the elderly. 10 , 6 , 13 , 8 , 16 , 15

Precautions for Applying to Daily Life

Megestrol acetate is an effective drug for treating anorexia and weight loss, but because it carries the risk of side effects, it is important to take it according to your doctor's instructions. When taking megestrol acetate, be aware of side effects such as weight gain and edema, and consult your doctor if necessary. 10 , 6 , 13 , 8 , 16 , 15

Current Research Limitations

There is a lack of research on the long-term effects of megestrol acetate. Additionally, the effectiveness and side effects of megestrol acetate may vary depending on the patient's condition and the purpose of treatment. Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor before taking megestrol acetate. 10 , 6 , 13 , 8 , 16 , 15

Future Research Directions

Further research is needed on the long-term effects and safety of megestrol acetate. Also, research is needed to clarify how the effectiveness and side effects of megestrol acetate vary depending on the patient's condition and the purpose of treatment. 10 , 6 , 13 , 8 , 16 , 15

Conclusion

Megestrol acetate is an effective drug for treating anorexia and weight loss, but it can cause side effects. It is important to take it according to your doctor's instructions. When taking megestrol acetate, be aware of side effects such as weight gain and edema, and consult your doctor if necessary. Further research is needed on the long-term effects and safety of megestrol acetate. 10 , 6 , 13 , 8 , 16 , 15
