Main Research Findings

Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is an immunosuppressant drug commonly used to prevent organ rejection after transplantation and to treat autoimmune diseases such as lupus nephritis and uveitis. 13 , 8 , 5 , 14 MMF works by inhibiting the production of purines, which are essential for cell growth and division, particularly in immune cells. This suppression of immune cell activity helps to reduce the activity of the immune system and prevent rejection or autoimmune attacks. However, MMF can also have a range of side effects, some of which can be serious. 5 , 16 , 2

Reasons for Side Effects

MMF's side effects arise from its mechanism of action. By inhibiting purine synthesis, it affects not only immune cells but also other rapidly dividing cells in the body, such as those in the gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow, and developing fetus. This can lead to various side effects, such as gastrointestinal problems, bone marrow suppression, and teratogenicity (the ability to cause birth defects). 2 , 16 It's important to note that the severity of these side effects can vary greatly between individuals.
