Major research findings

Pyrantel is an effective drug for the treatment of intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. 11 , 4 , 26 , 8 , 28 , 19 , 25 , 13 , 14 , 27 These studies found that pyrantel was highly effective in a single dose, especially against roundworms, with nearly 100% cure rates. 11 , 4 , 26 , 8 Pyrantel was also found to be highly effective against whipworms. 11 , 4 , 26 , 8 However, studies suggest that pyrantel is less effective against hookworms than other deworming medications. 4 , 28 However, multiple doses may increase its efficacy. 28

Reasons for side effects

Pyrantel's side effects are thought to be caused by the drug's action on nerve cells in the intestinal tract. 24 This action can lead to gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms.

A single dose of T.C.E. was more effective than single doses of bephenium hydroxynaphthoate and pyrantel pamoate. Three daily doses of bephenium or pyrantel were comparable in effectiveness to a single dose of T.C.E. The only disadvantage of T.C.E. is its potential for deterioration under tropical conditions.
