Original Abstract of the Article

Major Research Findings

Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication commonly used to treat herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) infections. Several studies have shown its effectiveness in treating these infections, such as in reducing the duration of herpes zoster rash and associated pain ( 27 ), preventing the recurrence of genital herpes ( 18 ), and even potentially delaying the progression of multiple sclerosis ( 25 ). However, like most medications, valacyclovir can have side effects.

Reasons for Side Effects

Valacyclovir works by interfering with the replication process of the herpes viruses, preventing them from multiplying and spreading. While this targeted action is beneficial, it can sometimes lead to side effects as the medication might also affect other cells in the body.

Common Side Effects

Headache

Headache is a commonly reported side effect of valacyclovir, occurring in approximately 12% of patients ( 18 ).

Nausea

Nausea is another common side effect, affecting around 6% of patients ( 18 ).

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is also a reported side effect, observed in 3% of patients ( 18 ).

Neurotoxicity
