Multiple studies have shown that alendronate is effective in treating postmenopausal osteoporosis. 9 , 6 , 7 , 14 , 1 , 10 , 5 , 12 , 11 , 3 , 2 , 4 , 15 , 13 , 8 These studies have shown that alendronate increases bone density and reduces bone turnover rate. It has also been suggested that alendronate may improve bone quality and reduce the risk of fractures. 5 , 12 , 11 , 4 Some studies have shown that the increase in bone density and the reduction in bone turnover rate persist even after alendronate treatment is stopped. 6 , 7 , 12 , 13 In addition, it has been shown that alendronate is effective even at lower doses than the conventional dose. 9 , 13

Improved postmenopausal osteoporosis treatment

A study of 30 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis compared the effects of alendronate (a bisphosphonate medication) to placebo over six months. Alendronate significantly reduced bone turnover markers within three months and increased lumbar bone mineral density by 3.7% after six months. These positive effects were maintained for six months after stopping treatment. The control group showed a slow decrease in lumbar bone density, which was significant only after 18 months. Femoral bone density was not significantly affected by alendronate, while the control group showed a significant decrease in femoral neck density. This suggests that alendronate may be an effective alternative to estrogen treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis, particularly in improving lumbar bone density and preventing femoral loss. Larger studies are needed to assess the effectiveness of alendronate in reducing fracture risk.
