Major Research Findings

Aztreonam is an antibiotic effective against Gram-negative bacterial infections. 13 , 1 , 17 , 14 , 15 Its effectiveness has been confirmed even in newborns and children, and it is used to treat infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and sepsis. 13 , 1 , 14 , 8 , 9 Additionally, studies have shown that aztreonam is effective in treating peritonitis and sexually transmitted infections in adults. 11 , 19 Furthermore, aztreonam is used in combination with other antibiotics to treat complicated skin and skin structure infections. 7 Aztreonam is generally well-tolerated, with few side effects. 13 , 1 , 19 , 15 However, some studies have reported side effects such as diarrhea. 13 Furthermore, aztreonam may affect the intestinal flora and reduce the resistance of the intestines. 5 , 6 Additionally, animal studies have suggested that aztreonam may cause seizures. 3 In rats with vitamin K deficiency, aztreonam has been reported to have less impact on clotting time compared to other antibiotics. 10
