Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common, chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes airflow obstruction and breathing difficulties. 103 It affects over 200 million people worldwide. 46 COPD is associated with cough, phlegm, shortness of breath, and a reduction in lung function, quality of life, and life expectancy. 103

Treatment for COPD aims to improve patients' well-being, reduce mortality, morbidity, and exacerbations. 77 Guidelines recommend an individualized step-up approach, where treatment is intensified if initial results are unsatisfactory. 46

Many clinical trials have confirmed the long-term effectiveness of combining inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β2-agonists for COPD treatment. 82
