Major Research Findings

Desloratadine is a second-generation antihistamine medication commonly used for the treatment of allergic rhinitis. Several studies have investigated its effects and safety profile. 16 , 2 , 14 , 12 , 1 , , 13 , 15 , 23 , 20 , 17 , 11 , 22 , 6 , 18 , 5 , 7 , 3 , 10 , 24 , 21 , 9 , 4 These studies generally show desloratadine to be effective in reducing symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Some research suggests it might also help improve asthma symptoms. 14 , 24 On the other hand, desloratadine can cause side effects like dry mouth and drowsiness. 16 , 20 , 17 Some research indicates that desloratadine may have a slight impact on the central nervous system. 20 , 17 Moreover, desloratadine may cause more pronounced drowsiness in patients with certain genetic variations. 22

Benefits and Risks

Desloratadine is a promising treatment option for reducing the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. It may also be helpful in improving asthma symptoms. 14 , 24 Furthermore, desloratadine has been found to be safer than older antihistamines, with fewer side effects like drowsiness. 6
