Major Research Findings

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the bladder with an unknown cause and no established effective treatment. This disease mainly affects women and causes symptoms such as bladder pain, urinary frequency, urgency, and nocturia. 30 , 11

Treatment for IC includes dietary and lifestyle changes, oral medication, intravesical instillations, and surgery. 11 , 19

Several studies have suggested that pentosan polysulfate sodium may be effective in improving IC symptoms. 30 , 12

Oral amitriptyline has also been shown to be an effective medical treatment for IC. 30 , 14

In a randomized controlled trial, sildenafil significantly improved IC symptom and problem indices, urodynamic index, and patient overall rating of improvement in symptoms compared to placebo. The treatment was well-tolerated with mild to moderate and transient adverse events.
