Original Abstract of the Article

Major Research Findings

Several studies have shown that ofloxacin otic solution is effective in treating a variety of ear infections. For example, ofloxacin has been shown to be effective in treating otitis externa ( 2 ), acute otitis media with tympanostomy tubes ( 9 ), chronic suppurative otitis media ( 7 ), healing of tympanic membrane perforations ( 13 ), prevention of post-operative tympanostomy tube otorrhea ( 15 ), and acute otitis media with otorrhea through tympanostomy tubes ( 8 ).

Compared to other otic medications, ofloxacin otic solution has been shown to be more effective. For example, in the treatment of otitis externa, ofloxacin otic solution has been shown to be as effective as or more effective than neomycin/polymyxin B/hydrocortisone otic solution ( 2 ) and ciprofloxacin otic solution ( 10 ).

In the treatment of acute otitis media with tympanostomy tubes, ofloxacin otic solution has been shown to be as effective as or more effective than oral antibiotics such as amoxicillin/clavulanate ( 9 ). In addition, ofloxacin otic solution has been shown to have fewer side effects and a lower incidence of drug resistance compared to other otic medications.
