Major Research Findings

Oxcarbazepine is used to treat a variety of neurological disorders, including epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia, and neuropathic pain. It has been found to be effective in the treatment of these disorders. However, there is also evidence of certain side effects associated with its use.

Oxcarbazepine can cause serious skin rash such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). 8

Oxcarbazepine can affect cognitive function, and in some cases, cause lower extremity weakness. 1 , 14

Oxcarbazepine, like other antiepileptic medications, can cause hyponatremia. 14

This study evaluated treatment responses in benign familial neonatal epilepsy (BFNE). Mutations or deletions of KCNQ2 were found in 14 patients, and of KCNQ3 in 2 patients. All patients had normal development and remained seizure-free at a mean follow-up period of 7.8 years.
