Major findings

Sulfinpyrazone is known to have several side effects. The most significant side effect is edema formation caused by its antinatriuretic effect, meaning it can interfere with the body's ability to excrete sodium, potentially leading to fluid retention and swelling. 18 In addition, sulfinpyrazone can also cause gastrointestinal issues, such as stomach pain, indigestion, and nausea, possibly due to its irritating effect on the stomach lining. 13 Furthermore, as sulfinpyrazone is a platelet inhibitor, it can increase the risk of bleeding. 8

Reasons for side effects

The reasons behind sulfinpyrazone's side effects are as follows:

  • Antinatriuretic effect: Sulfinpyrazone inhibits sodium excretion in the kidneys, leading to fluid retention and potentially edema. 18
