Bupropion is a medication used to promote smoking cessation. This study measured plasma bupropion and its metabolite levels in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized smoking-cessation trial. It found that higher hydroxybupropion concentrations were associated with better smoking cessation outcomes, suggesting that hydroxybupropion contributes to the pharmacologic effects of bupropion.

The study compared the efficacy of varenicline, bupropion, and placebo for smoking cessation.
