Original Abstract of the Article

Major research findings

Desmopressin has been shown to have various effects in different contexts. One pilot study on dogs ( 27 ) found that perioperative desmopressin significantly prolonged survival time for bitches with mammary gland tumors. Another study ( 18 ) demonstrated its effectiveness in treating patients with von Willebrand disease type 1 (VWD1), VWD 2A, or thrombocytopathy. However, a separate study ( 25 ) indicated that desmopressin did not reduce the need for transfusions after surgery in patients with normal preoperative hemostasis. Research ( 20 ) suggests that desmopressin can be beneficial in preventing or treating bleeding complications during pregnancy.

Reasons for side effects

Desmopressin is a synthetic analogue of vasopressin, a hormone that helps regulate water balance in the body. It works by increasing the reabsorption of water in the kidneys, which can lead to water retention and potential water intoxication.

Common side effects

Headache

Desmopressin has been linked to headaches in several studies ( 14 , 24 , 20 ), potentially due to water intoxication.

Nausea

Side effect management
