Original Abstract of the Article

Major research findings

Thunder god vine (Tripterygium wilfordii) is a traditional Chinese medicine with a long history of use. Recent research has shown that compounds extracted from thunder god vine, such as triptolide and celastrol, have a variety of pharmacological effects, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. 19 4 15 18 8

Triptolide has been shown to inhibit the growth of triple-negative breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) and induce apoptosis. 19

Dihydro-β-agarofuran-type sesquiterpenoids, extracted from the seeds of thunder god vine, have been shown to suppress osteoclastogenesis. 4

Triptolide has been reported to lead to hepatic intolerance to exogenous lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation and to acute liver failure in mice. 9

Celastrol has been shown to inhibit necroptosis, a type of cell death, and protect against acute pancreatitis in mice. 6

Thunder god vine has also been shown to have immunosuppressive effects and is used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. 10 12

Celastrol has also been shown to suppress the growth and metastasis of colorectal cancer cells. 16

Combining triptolide with celastrol has shown a synergistic effect in inhibiting cancer cell growth. 2

Celastrol has shown potential benefits in preventing and treating obesity. 17 13

Celastrol has also been shown to inhibit the growth and metastasis of ovarian cancer cells. 20

Celastrol has been shown to suppress the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma cells. 7

Benefits and Risks

Benefits Summary

Thunder god vine has a variety of pharmacological effects, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. 19 4 15 18 8 10 12 16 2 17 13 20 7

Risks Summary

Triptolide has been reported to lead to hepatic intolerance to exogenous lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation and to acute liver failure in mice. 9

Thunder god vine is used traditionally, but some of its ingredients have been shown to have toxic effects on the liver. 14

Comparison of Research

Commonalities

Many studies have confirmed that the components of thunder god vine have the potential to inhibit cancer cell growth and induce apoptosis. Anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects have also been observed. 19 4 15 18 8 10 12 16 2 17 13 20 7

Differences

Different studies have shown that the types of cancer that can be treated, the effective ingredients, and the mechanisms of action vary. 19 4 15 18 8 10 12 16 2 17 13 20 7

Consistency and Contradictions in Results

Research on the components of thunder god vine has shown potential benefits such as anti-cancer and immunosuppressive effects, but also potential liver toxicity. 9

Cautions in Applying Research to Everyday Life

Thunder god vine is used traditionally, but some of its ingredients have been shown to have toxic effects on the liver. 14

Consult with a medical professional before using products containing thunder god vine. 14

Limitations of Current Research

Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of action and safety of the components of thunder god vine. 9 14

Future Research Directions

Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of action and safety of the components of thunder god vine. 9 14

Conclusion

Research has shown that thunder god vine has a variety of potential benefits, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. However, some of its ingredients have been shown to have toxic effects on the liver. 19 4 15 18 8 10 12 16 2 17 13 20 7 9 14

Consult with a medical professional before using products containing thunder god vine. 14
