Major Research Findings
Alitretinoin has been shown to be effective in the treatment of a variety of skin diseases, including chronic hand eczema, ichthyosis, Darier disease, and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. 24 , 33 , 17 , 1 , 19 , 15 , 20 , 5
Reasons for Side Effects
Alitretinoin is a derivative of vitamin A and has the effect of regulating cell growth and differentiation. This effect improves the symptoms of skin diseases, but it can also affect other cells, which can lead to side effects. 13
Common Side Effects
Headache
Headache can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to the vasodilating effects of alitretinoin. 27 , 22 , 31
Dry Skin
Dry skin can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to decrease the skin's ability to retain moisture. 31 , 22 , 13 , 4
Dry Lips
Dry lips can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to decrease the lips' ability to retain moisture. 13 , 4
Dry Eyes
Dry eyes can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to decrease the eyes' ability to retain moisture. 13 , 4
Dry Nose
Dry nose can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to decrease the nose's ability to retain moisture. 13 , 4
Dry Mouth
Dry mouth can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to decrease the mouth's ability to retain moisture. 13 , 4
Rash
Rash can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to change the immune response of the skin. 31
Joint Pain
Joint pain can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to worsen inflammation in the joints. 31
Hyperlipidemia
Hyperlipidemia can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to inhibit lipid metabolism in the liver. 13 , 12 , 4
Liver Dysfunction
Liver dysfunction can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to the burden that alitretinoin places on the liver. 13
Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to inhibit the production of thyroid hormone. 22 , 4
Vision Problems
Vision problems can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to affect the tissues of the eye. 4
Hair Loss
Hair loss can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to inhibit hair growth. 14
Gastrointestinal Symptoms
Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc.) can occur with alitretinoin use. This is thought to be due to alitretinoin's ability to irritate the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract. 2 , 13 , 4
