Original Abstract of the Article

Major Research Findings

Haloperidol is a widely used antipsychotic medication that has been shown to be effective in treating the symptoms of schizophrenia, particularly hallucinations and delusions. 23 , 18 , 9 However, haloperidol can also cause side effects such as Parkinsonism, akathisia, and acute dystonia. 23 , 18 , 9 In addition, high doses of haloperidol have been linked to cognitive impairment. 19

Haloperidol is also effective in rapidly controlling severe, disruptive symptoms of acute schizophrenia. 21 Studies suggest that low doses of haloperidol may have less of an impact on cognitive function compared to other antipsychotics. 11

While haloperidol can cause an increase in prolactin levels, the use of aripiprazole as an adjunctive treatment has been shown to reduce prolactin levels. 20

The use of intravenous haloperidol (IVH) to manage agitation and psychosis in patients with delirium is common, even though it's not approved by the FDA. However, IVH has been linked to side effects such as QT prolongation, torsades de pointes (TdP), extrapyramidal symptoms, and catatonia. 25

Benefits and Risks

Benefit Summary

Haloperidol is an effective treatment for schizophrenia, particularly in reducing positive symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions. 23 , 18 , 9 It is also effective in rapidly controlling acute schizophrenia symptoms. 21 Low doses of haloperidol may have less of an impact on cognitive function compared to other antipsychotics. 11

Risk Summary

Haloperidol can cause side effects such as Parkinsonism, akathisia, and acute dystonia. 23 , 18 , 9 High doses of haloperidol may be linked to cognitive impairment. 19 Haloperidol can also cause an increase in prolactin levels. 20

Comparison of Studies

Commonalities in Studies

Numerous studies have established the effectiveness of haloperidol in treating schizophrenia. 23 , 18 , 9 Additionally, a consistent finding across many studies is that haloperidol can lead to adverse effects such as extrapyramidal symptoms. 23 , 18 , 9

Differences in Studies

The effects and side effects of haloperidol can vary depending on the dosage and method of administration. 3 , 4 Furthermore, individual patients can experience different responses to haloperidol. 7

Consistency and Discrepancies in Results

While some findings regarding the effects and side effects of haloperidol show consistency across studies, others demonstrate inconsistencies. 19 For instance, while high doses of haloperidol have been associated with cognitive decline, low doses have been suggested to have less of an impact on cognitive function. 11 Moreover, while haloperidol can lead to an increase in prolactin levels, the use of aripiprazole as an adjunctive treatment has been shown to reduce prolactin levels. 20 Further research is needed to clarify these inconsistencies.

Points to Consider for Real-World Application

Haloperidol is an effective treatment for schizophrenia, but it is important to use it cautiously due to the potential for side effects. 25 The optimal dosage and method of administration should be determined on a case-by-case basis. 3 , 4 It's crucial to follow your doctor's instructions carefully when taking haloperidol.

Limitations of Current Research

While numerous studies have investigated haloperidol, there are still unanswered questions. 24 For instance, the long-term effects and side effects of haloperidol, as well as the causes of individual variability in responses, are not fully understood. 7 Further research is needed to address these gaps.

Future Research Directions

More research is required to elucidate the long-term effects and side effects of haloperidol, as well as the factors contributing to individual variability in responses. 24 Additional research is also needed to optimize dosage and administration methods for haloperidol. 3 , 4

Conclusion

Haloperidol is an effective treatment for schizophrenia, but it's important to be aware of the potential for side effects. 25 Always follow your doctor's instructions when taking haloperidol and promptly report any side effects. 23 , 18 , 9
