Key Research Findings

Olsalazine is a medication used to treat ulcerative colitis, a condition that causes inflammation in the colon. Studies have shown that olsalazine is generally effective in managing ulcerative colitis, particularly in patients who do not tolerate sulfasalazine. 1 It has been found to be as effective as sulfasalazine in treating mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. 23 Olsalazine has also demonstrated its efficacy in preventing relapses in patients who have recovered from an acute attack of ulcerative colitis. 13 18

Reasons for Side Effects

The side effects of olsalazine are primarily attributed to 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), which is released when olsalazine breaks down in the colon. 22 While 5-ASA helps reduce inflammation in the colon, it can also stimulate bowel movements, potentially leading to diarrhea. 15 Additionally, 5-ASA may inhibit the sodium pump in the digestive tract, contributing to diarrhea. 15
