Original Abstract of the Article

Main research findings

Stiripentol is an antiepileptic drug used to treat severe, refractory epilepsy such as Dravet syndrome. This drug has been shown in several studies to improve brain uptake and enhance pharmacological activity compared to traditional antiepileptic drugs. 13 . However, stiripentol can interact with other antiepileptic drugs, increasing the risk of side effects. 20 .

Reasons for side effects

The side effects of stiripentol are due to its inhibitory effect on CYP450 enzymes. CYP450 enzymes are enzymes involved in drug metabolism, and stiripentol inhibits the activity of these enzymes, increasing the blood concentration of other antiepileptic drugs. This increase in blood concentration can increase the risk of side effects. 15 .

Common side effects

Loss of appetite

Loss of appetite is a common side effect of stiripentol. This may be caused by the inhibitory effect on CYP450 enzymes. 10 . Also, the increase in blood concentration of other antiepileptic drugs due to stiripentol administration may contribute to loss of appetite. 1 .
