Major Research Findings

Topotecan is a topoisomerase I inhibitor used to treat various cancers, including small cell lung cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. 18 While it has shown promise in treating these cancers, clinical use of topotecan is limited by its side effects, including cross-resistance with other drugs, rapid conversion to inactive form in the body, and high water solubility. 18 However, research is ongoing to develop new ways to deliver topotecan, like encapsulating it in liposomes or nanoparticles, to improve its therapeutic efficacy and reduce side effects. 18 、 24 、 3

Reasons for Side Effects

Topotecan is a potent anti-cancer drug that works by targeting and damaging DNA in cancer cells. However, this mechanism also affects normal healthy cells, resulting in various side effects. 3 Additionally, the method of administration and the specific cancer being treated can influence the type and severity of side effects experienced. 11

Common Side Effects

Bone Marrow Suppression

Topotecan can significantly impact bone marrow cells, leading to a decrease in white blood cells (neutropenia), red blood cells (anemia), and platelets (thrombocytopenia). 4 、 11 、 15 This suppression increases the risk of infections, bleeding, and fatigue. 4
