Major Research Findings

Alitretinoin is a medication used to treat severe acne. However, the link between isotretinoin and psychiatric disorders remains unclear. 7 Alitretinoin has been shown to be effective and well-tolerated for the treatment of chronic hand eczema in a 24-week treatment course. 14 Alitretinoin has also been found to reduce erythema in patients with inherited ichthyosis. 2 The combination of cryotherapy and topical imiquimod may be an effective and low-risk treatment for limited, cutaneous Kaposi's sarcoma. 17 Alitretinoin can also be used to successfully treat nivolumab-induced lichenoid dermatitis in patients with metastatic melanoma. Alitretinoin combined with interferon-γ can enhance poly(I:C) induced apoptosis in cancer cells by increasing TLR3 receptor expression. 16 Alitretinoin, similar to its structural analog 9-cis retinoic acid, can stimulate lymphangiogenesis and reduce postsurgical lymphedema. 15 Alitretinoin has also been found to induce skin pigmentation, potentially affecting melasma.
