Main Research Findings

Cefotaxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that has been shown to be effective in treating various bacterial infections in a number of studies. 12 showed that cefotaxime is highly effective in the immediate treatment of both community and nosocomial acquired severe lower respiratory tract infections. 22 suggests that cefotaxime can be used for outpatient treatment of some serious community-acquired pediatric infections. 5 showed that many children with serious otolaryngologic infections can be managed successfully and safely as outpatients by a combined team of otolaryngology and infectious disease specialists. 2 found that once-daily oral ceftibuten for 14 days yielded comparable results to sequential ceftriaxone/ceftibuten treatment in children aged 6 months to 16 years with DMSA-documented acute pyelonephritis and it allowed outpatient management in the majority of these children. However, 21 suggests that a single injection of ceftriaxone can increase the growth of Candida spp. in the gut, even after a single injection, which could cause problems in immunocompromised patients. 19 showed that cefotaxime can cause side effects such as diarrhea and eosinophilia in neonates and young infants.

Reasons for side effects

Cefotaxime is an antibiotic that works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, killing bacteria. However, cefotaxime can affect the intestinal bacteria of humans as well as bacteria. Human intestinal bacteria are essential for digestion, absorption, and maintenance of immune function. If cefotaxime affects the intestinal flora, it can lead to side effects such as diarrhea due to indigestion and the development of infections due to reduced immunity. Cefotaxime is metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidneys. If there are problems with the liver or kidneys, the metabolism and excretion of cefotaxime may be delayed, increasing the risk of side effects.

Common side effects

Diarrhea

Diarrhea can occur as a result of an imbalance in the intestinal flora caused by cefotaxime. This is reported in several studies. For example, 11 , 13 , 19 , and 21 all show that diarrhea is a potential side effect of cefotaxime treatment.

Rash

Rash may occur as an allergic reaction to cefotaxime. 11 and 14 report this as a potential side effect. If you experience a rash, consult your doctor immediately.

Liver Dysfunction

Cefotaxime is metabolized by the liver. It is possible for cefotaxime to cause liver dysfunction, though it is rare. 8 , 13 , and 14 report this as a potential side effect. Consult your doctor if you experience symptoms of liver dysfunction.

Kidney Dysfunction

Cefotaxime is excreted by the kidneys. If you have kidney problems, the excretion of cefotaxime may be delayed and the risk of side effects may increase. 26 shows that cefotaxime may not be removed by usual hemodialysis treatment for patients with CRF. Consult your doctor if you experience symptoms of kidney dysfunction.

Other side effects

Cefotaxime administration can cause other side effects such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, thrombosis, and anaphylactic shock. These side effects are reported in 11 , 13 , 29 , 16 , 19 , 10 , 20 , 26 , 8 , 7 , 24 , 28 , 2 , 14 , 27 , 6 , 9 , 5 , 17 , and 18 .
